Kim consoles families of North Korea soldiers with heartfelt pledges.

SEOUL: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has offered his condolences to the families of soldiers killed while fighting for Russia in Ukraine, calling their sacrifice a symbol of “unbearable pain and ultimate heroism,” state media reported Saturday.

At a ceremony in Pyongyang, Kim met with bereaved families, promising full state support for their children and pledging to honor the memory of the fallen with five commitments, including the construction of a monument and a new street dedicated to the soldiers’ families.

“I, our state and our army will take full responsibility for their children, raising them as courageous fighters like their fathers,” Kim said in his speech, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Seoul estimates that around 600 North Korean soldiers have died and thousands more were wounded since Pyongyang began deploying troops to Russia’s war effort in 2024. Intelligence agencies say North Korea sent over 10,000 soldiers, along with heavy weapons and artillery.

Images released by KCNA showed Kim emotionally embracing soldiers’ families, kneeling before portraits of the dead, and laying medals and flowers in their honor.North Korea soldiers

Earlier ceremonies also showed the leader consoling returning troops and paying respects at flag-draped coffins of the deceased.
