Karachi weather alert warns of urban flooding risk
PMD warns Karachi of heavy monsoon rains, possible urban flooding
Karachi Weather Alert, September 9, 2025 — The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a severe weather alert for Karachi, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall until September 10, 2025, with risks of urban flooding due to an intensified monsoon system.
Several areas of the city, including Metroville, SITE, Baldia, Defence, Korangi, Shahrah-e-Faisal, and Burns Road, recorded light to moderate showers on Tuesday. The PMD reported a maximum temperature of 34°C, humidity at 91%, and winds blowing at 11 km/h. Meteorologists predict that some areas could receive over 100 mm of rain, with thunder and lightning.
The wet spell is being driven by a deep depression that formed in Madhya Pradesh, India, moved into Rajasthan, and is now impacting Sindh. Strong monsoon currents are also affecting Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpur Khas, and Hyderabad, where heavy showers have already been recorded.
In Karachi, officials warned of urban flooding in low-lying areas due to poor drainage systems. The Malir River experienced flash floods, disrupting traffic and raising safety concerns. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from electric poles and exposed wires, and follow rescue service guidelines.
The weather disruption has already impacted education, with Jinnah Sindh Medical University postponing exams and moving classes online for September 9. Local administrations remain on high alert to manage emergencies.
The PMD expects the rain to subside after September 10, but residents are urged to remain cautious as the monsoon system may still cause temporary disruptions.Karachi Weather Alert
