Saudi Arabia Security boosted by new SMDA deal with Pakistan

Saudi Arabia Security has entered a new phase with the signing of the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement (SMDA) between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. This landmark pact signals Riyadh’s growing doubt about US protection and its decision to diversify partners.

The SMDA highlights Saudi Arabia’s plan to build deeper military integration with Pakistan. Within the pact, seven strategic actions are recommended — from joint air defence drills and training of 10,000–15,000 Saudi personnel in Pakistan each year to intelligence-sharing centres and joint production of advanced weapons systems.

Saudi Arabia is also eyeing a $10–15 billion defence investment fund with Pakistan and preferential energy deals to stabilise Islamabad’s economy. Experts say these measures showcase Pakistan’s advanced electronic warfare and air-defence capabilities while positioning Saudi Arabia Security as more self-reliant and regionally powerful.

This partnership is viewed as a pivotal step to reduce dependence on US security commitments and cement a new era of Saudi–Pakistani strategic cooperation.
