BREAKING NEWS (Devastating Pakistan Floods and Chopper Crash Claim Over 200 Lives in Northern Regions—August-15-2025)

At least 194 people have lost their lives and dozens more have been injured after relentless monsoon rains triggered deadly Pakistan floods and landslides across the country’s northern regions, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed on Friday. The situation remains volatile, with the death toll expected to rise as rescue efforts continue in difficult terrain.

According to NDMA data, the fatalities include 180 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), five in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), and nine in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Among the victims were 158 men, 19 women, and 17 children. Nationwide, 28 people have been injured, and 116 houses have sustained damage — including 34 partially and 14 fully in KP, 14 partially and 3 fully in GB, and 23 partially and 28 fully in AJK.

Floodwaters have swept away homes and bridges, while communications in several areas have been completely cut off. Damaged mobile phone towers have left flood-affected regions without contact, isolating communities from the outside world.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) confirmed that relentless heavy rains and flash floods over the past 24 hours have resulted in 229 fatalities and left 14 people injured across various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

According to the PDMA, the victims include two women and eight children, while the injured comprise 11 men, two women, and one child. Rescue teams continue to work in challenging conditions to reach affected areas and provide urgent assistance.

The authority’s latest damage assessment revealed that 30 houses have been impacted, with 25 partially damaged and five completely destroyed, leaving several families homeless.

Deadly incidents have been reported in Swat, Buner, Bajaur, Torghar, Mansehra, Shangla, and Battagram, with Bajaur and Battagram identified as the worst-hit districts. Local officials warn that the toll could rise further as search and rescue operations progress.

Helicopter tragedy due to flash floods:

In a separate incident, A Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government MI-17 helicopter engaged in relief operations crashed in Mohmand district on Friday August 15 2025, killing all five people on board, officials confirmed.

According to KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s confirmed the tragedy through his spokesperson, Faraz Mughal, the helicopter was delivering emergency supplies to Bajaur’s Salarzai area when it encountered severe weather conditions and went down. The victims included both crew members and relief workers. Meanwhile, Another helicopter remains active in rescue operations in Buner.

DAY OF MOURNING—Rescue and government response of loss due to floods:

Emergency teams, supported by the Pakistan Army, are working around the clock to evacuate stranded residents and tourists. Roads are being cleared in landslide-hit districts such as Shangla, while police trucks are transporting people from flooded zones like Buner to safer areas.

CM Gandapur has directed immediate deployment of relief teams and announced a day of mourning to be observed tomorrow. Meanwhile, Governor KP has called on all stakeholders to work together during this crisis to honour the victims. He also directed emergency units to accelerate rescue operations in all flood-affected areas..

Expressing deep grief over the tragic loss of lives, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the martyred individuals. He reaffirmed that the entire nation shares in their sorrow and stands united with them during this period of immense pain, vowing that the sacrifices of these courageous sons of the soil will forever be remembered and honoured.

The Chief Minister further announced that the provincial flag would be lowered to half-mast as a mark of respect, and the martyrs would be laid to rest with full state honours. He prayed for the elevation of their ranks in the hereafter and for strength, courage, and patience to be granted to the grieving families in bearing their irreparable loss.
