Glacier Burst Wreaks Havoc in Ghizer, Creates Artificial Lake
A glacier burst in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Ghizer district has caused severe destruction, leading to the formation of an artificial lake. The incident occurred in the Tali Das area of Gupis, alarming local communities and authorities.
According to the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA), the glacier burst flooded surrounding areas, damaging infrastructure and properties. Fortunately, no loss of life has been reported so far.
Villages Cut Off, Roads Blocked
The flood caused by the glacier burst blocked the Gilgit-Shandur Road and disconnected several villages, including Raushan, from other areas. Landslides and debris have added to the difficulties for locals.
The rising water level in the Ghizer River has created a large artificial lake, increasing the risk of submerging nearby settlements. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further damage.
Rescue Operations in Full Swing
Officials confirmed that timely alerts helped avoid casualties. So far, over 50 residents have been safely evacuated. Helicopters have been deployed for rescue and relief operations in the affected region.
The Chief Minister and Home Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan are actively overseeing the emergency response, ensuring quick assistance for stranded communities.
Weather Warnings Add to Fears
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall in the coming days, which could worsen the situation. Authorities have urged residents to remain alert and follow safety advisories.
