Pakistan blocks over 500 militant accounts on social media after identifying 850 linked to banned outfits, urging global cooperation to curb online extremism.
In a large-scale crackdown, Pakistan has shut down more than 500 social media accounts connected to banned militant outfits after identifying around 850 suspicious profiles. The operation, carried out by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) in coordination with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), targeted accounts linked to groups such as Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), and Baloch Liberation Front (BLF)—all designated as terrorist organizations internationally.
These accounts collectively reached over two million users and were spread across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), Telegram, and WhatsApp. Facebook and TikTok showed the highest cooperation, removing over 90% of reported content, while X and WhatsApp responded to only about 30% of removal requests.
Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja also secured cooperation from Telegram despite its current ban in Pakistan. Officials have urged for stronger global partnerships to combat online extremism and limit the digital reach of militant propaganda.
