Nicolas Sarkozy handed 5-year jail

PARIS, Sept 25: Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to five years in jail after being found guilty of criminal conspiracy tied to alleged Libyan funding for his 2007 election campaign.

The Paris court’s ruling is unprecedented in modern French politics, making Sarkozy the first ex-president to face such punishment. While acquitted of corruption and illegal campaign financing, he was held responsible for allowing aides to seek money from Muammar Gaddafi’s regime.

The sentence is enforceable immediately, giving Sarkozy only a short time to prepare before heading to prison. He maintains his innocence, calling the ruling “scandalous.”
