Court reinstates PTA Chairman Hafeez-ur-Rehman after legal battle
ISLAMABAD — In a landmark ruling, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) reinstated PTA Chairman Hafeez-ur-Rehman to his position on Thursday, reversing the previous day’s order that had removed him.
A two-member bench, comprising Justice Muhammad Asif and Justice Inam Amin Minhas, heard the appeal after Hafeez-ur-Rehman challenged the single bench decision. His counsel argued that the rules governing his appointment had been amended with cabinet approval before the petition was filed, making his appointment lawful.
The court accepted these arguments, emphasizing that procedural changes were made in March, months before the petition. This decision allows PTA Chairman Hafeez-ur-Rehman to resume his duties immediately, ensuring continuity in Pakistan’s telecom regulatory leadership.
Earlier, Justice Babar Sattar had declared the appointment of Hafeez-ur-Rehman illegal, calling it a mala fide exercise of power. However, with the new judgment, the IHC highlighted the importance of due process and reinforced the authority of the PTA in shaping Pakistan’s digital landscape.arynews
