Major tech platforms — Google, Microsoft, and TikTok — have deactivated approximately 13.5 million user accounts in Nigeria. This sweeping action responds to a range of violations including spam, impersonation, child-safety breaches, and misinformation, according to compliance reports submitted under Nigeria’s online safety regulations.Tech safety Nigeria
The move follows the 2024 Code of Practice compliance report governed by Nigerian regulators such as NITDA, NCC, and the National Broadcasting Commission. The framework mandates local registration, adherence to Nigerian laws and taxes, and robust content safety measures.
In total, over 754,000 user complaints were recorded last year, leading to the removal of nearly 59 million pieces of harmful content. Of these, 420,000 items were restored after user appeals.
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) emphasized that these disclosure efforts mark a critical step toward creating a “safer and more responsible digital environment” for Nigerian users. Encouraging continued collaboration, NITDA pledged to work with tech companies, civil society, and regulatory bodies to boost digital literacy, transparency, and trust.Tech safety Nigeria ABN TVTech | Business | Economy
